The Goodwill Store

Now, if you really want to know a well kept secret, go to the Goodwill
store on North Street in the heart of downtown Pittsfield, and check out
their children's clothing section.
The Goodwill itself has alot to offer, tons of clothing, and if you
spend some time combing through the racks you will be quite surprised at
the brand names and quality of the clothing. (Not all Goodwill Stores have
such nice and unused merchandise.)
But the real treasures are the racks marked CHILDREN'S CLOTHES----$1.75.
Finding a bargain on kid's clothing is really a treat for me. Yes , I have
shopped the specialty children's stores and drooled over $48.00 dresses
for my daughter. And, oh my, don't take me into Baby Gap or anywhere near
the Gifted Child. I always end up buying something, (a pair of stretch
pants, $24.00-pajamas, $20.00- a pretty dress $32.00), and then walk away
with such a heavy feeling of guilt at having been so extravagant. It goes
against every fiber of my bargain trained sensibility to spend so much
on a child's clothing, when they trash it on the first wear, (they're kid's),
or grow out of it before it can be properly worn.
So, you can imagine my surprise and delight when I happened to wander
into The Goodwill one day while doing my laundry and killing time. As I
browsed, my basket started filling up at an unusual rate. It was early
fall and I had not yet bought any winter items for my daughter. Well, I
walked away from there a very happy woman. Not only had I saved an astronomical
amount of money, but I had Gap, L.L. Bean, Express, Hannah, Flapdoodle
and The Place. All for $1.75 each!! I picked up the cutest pair of Lion
King slippers for $2.25. Little lion paws, just her size! Never worn raincoats
lined with flannel, $2.25! Macy's angora sweater , $1.75! And on, and on,
etc.....
This really rocked my world. I shop there now on a bi-weekly basis and
I am never disappointed. They regularly stock and I always fill my basket
before leaving. The sales people are always courteous and helpful. The
Goodwill Industries are the largest employers of individuals with disabilities
and the money from the retail stores goes into training and placement of
these individuals.
I estimate that my daughter's wardrobe for the winter cost me well under
$50.00, and she has never been dressed better. Her drawers are overflowing
and I feel good knowing that I didn't spend a fortune.
Well, now that I have let the cat out of the bag, I will hurry down
to The Goodwill and start my spring shopping as I have no intention of
spending what I did the year before on spring and summer clothing. Maybe
I'll see you there.
Sincerely,
The Berkshire Bargain Babe
